Suwannee County Schools is proud to announce that Chief Financial Officer and Chief Negotiator Marsha Brown, along with the District's negotiating team and in partnership with the Suwannee River Service Unit, have successfully reached a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) regarding teacher salaries for the 2026-2027 school year (not pictured: Josh Williams and Malcolm Hines).

We believe Suwannee County Schools is among the first districts in Florida to reach an agreement for the upcoming school year. This achievement reflects the collaborative relationship between District leadership and the Suwannee River Service Unit, as well as our shared commitment to supporting educators.

At Suwannee County Schools, we know that great schools begin with great teachers. By reaching an agreement early, we can provide certainty for our employees and continue focusing on student achievement.

We appreciate the hard work and dedication of everyone involved in the negotiation process. Together, we remain committed to creating an environment where teachers feel valued, supported, and empowered to help every student succeed.

When we take care of our teachers, our teachers can take care of our students.

This summer, we’re celebrating the amazing alumni of Suwannee County School District and the journeys they’ve taken since graduation.

Today, we’re featuring Cody Blackburn, a 2020 graduate of Suwannee High School. Since walking the halls of SCSD, he has gone on to become a journey lineman for Suwannee Valley Electric Cooperative.

When asked about the impact SCSD had on him, Blackburn shared:
“All of the teachers seemed like they truly cared for us as individuals and would help in any way they could.”

While in school, Blackburn was involved in NROTC, and one favorite memory that still stands out is:
“All of my memories from NJROTC are my favorite, the bonds you make within the unit are the same as family.”

One accomplishment Blackburn is especially proud of since graduating is:
“Being able to stay where I grew up and help the community in times of need are worth everything to me. ”

And for current SCSD students, Blackburn offers this advice:
“If your plans after high school don’t work out the way you want them too, lean hard on your faith and everything will work out in time.”

Thank you, Cody Blackburn, for representing SCSD so well and for inspiring the next generation of students.

Keeping students safe is a top priority in the Suwannee County School District, and it’s something we work on every single day.

Through Florida’s Guardian Program, SCSD has trained and approved staff members on campus who serve as an added layer of protection. These individuals complete extensive background checks, rigorous training, and must meet strict state requirements before serving in this role.

In addition, our schools maintain:
Secure campuses with controlled access
Regular safety drills and emergency protocols
Strong partnerships with local law enforcement and first responders

Our goal is simple: to create a safe, supportive environment where students can focus on learning and families can feel confident about their child’s well-being.

This summer, we’re celebrating the amazing alumni of Suwannee County School District and the journeys they’ve taken since graduation.

Today, we’re featuring Stephen Mercer, a 1997 graduate of Branford High School. Since walking the halls of SCSD, he has gone on to practice Law in the 3rd Judicial Circuit in Lake City.

When asked about the impact SCSD had on him, Mercer shared:
“The Suwannee County School District played a meaningful role in my academic development and professional success. The district provided a strong educational foundation, dedicated educators, and opportunities that fostered critical thinking, discipline, and a commitment to lifelong learning. The skills and values I gained during my time in the district helped prepare me for higher education and ultimately contributed to becoming an attorney. I am grateful for the positive impact the district had on my academic journey and career path.”

While in school, Mercer was involved in football and track & field, and one favorite memory that still stands out is:
“While my time in school provided many positive memories, what has remained most meaningful throughout my life are the lasting friendships I formed. The relationships I built with classmates created a sense of community, support, and belonging that extended well beyond graduation. These lifelong bonds have enriched both my personal and professional life, and they continue to be among the most valuable and enduring outcomes of my educational experience.”

One accomplishment Mercer is especially proud of since graduating is:
“I am most humbled and proud to have become an attorney and to have been given the opportunity to serve the people of my community. The privilege of advocating for others, helping individuals navigate difficult challenges, and contributing to the well-being of the community is both an honor and a responsibility that I deeply value. Serving others through the practice of law has been one of the most rewarding aspects of my professional journey.”

And for current SCSD students, Mercer offers this advice:
"Hard work beats talent when talent won't work."

Thank you, Stephen, for representing SCSD so well and for inspiring the next generation of students.

Today, we’re featuring Rema Summerlin, a 2025 graduate of RIVEROAK Technical College. Since walking the halls of SCSD, she has gone on to be a Surgical Technologist at HCA Florida Lake City Hospital.

When asked about the impact SCSD had on her, Summerlin shared:
“SCSD had a big impact on my life because it gave me the opportunity to attend a college close to home and earn a degree that will help me build a successful future. Being able to stay near my family while continuing my education made the experience more comfortable and achievable for me, and I’m grateful for the opportunities it provided.”

While in school, Summerlin’s favorite memory was receiving the outstanding clinical performance award.

One accomplishment Summerlin is especially proud of since graduating is:
“I am most proud of how much I have grown personally and professionally. I was able to continue my education, work toward a career in healthcare, and gain the skills and confidence needed to build a successful future for myself and my family.”

“Stay focused, work hard, and take advantage of every opportunity that comes your way. Even when things get stressful or challenging, keep pushing forward because all of your hard work will pay off in the end. Don’t be afraid to ask for help, believe in yourself, and remember that success looks different for everyone. Be a sponge and absorb it all! ”

This summer, we’re celebrating the amazing alumni of Suwannee County School District and the journeys they’ve taken since graduation.

Today, we’re featuring Sherman Riley, a 2000 graduate of Suwannee High School. Since walking the halls of SCSD, he has gone on to be a Vice President of Supply Chain and Operations at Sy-Klone, where he leads end-to-end supply chain and manufacturing operations for filtration systems used on heavy equipment, including Caterpillar, John Deere, and Volvo. He holds an Industrial Engineering degree from Florida State University and brings over 20 years of operations leadership experience. Sherman spent 5 years with PepsiCo managing Gatorade operations across Florida and the Bahamas, followed by 15 years at Johnson & Johnson in multiple leadership roles supporting the manufacturing of ACUVUE contact lenses.

When asked about the impact SCSD had on him, Riley shared:
“Growing up in the Suwannee County School District played a major role in shaping both my academic foundation and leadership development. During my time in SCSD, I challenged myself academically by taking Honors, AP, and Dual Enrollment courses, which helped prepare me for a successful transition to Florida State University and my pursuit of an Industrial Engineering degree. Additionally, the vocational school provided valuable technical and technology-related experience that exposed me to hands-on learning and practical skills. Looking back, SCSD provided me with a well-rounded educational experience that combined academics, athletics, leadership, and technical development, all of which helped shape the person and leader I am today.”

While in school, Riley was involved in extracurricular activities including baseball, basketball, and the National Honor Society. Participating in athletics and leadership organizations helped me develop important skills such as teamwork, discipline, communication, accountability, and leadership. These skills continue to benefit me today as a business executive, and one favorite memory that still stands out is:
“Riding my bike going to public library after school and going into Cheek & Scott Pharmacy to get candy and soda.”

One accomplishment Riley is especially proud of since graduating is:
“Being in a position to pay it forward and give back scholarship money to graduating high school seniors. Being able to see students from my hometown go off to college and accomplish their dreams and become productive citizens and impact their community. ”

And for current SCSD students, Riley offers this advice:
“Take challenging classes that will prepare them for college and trade school as well as being in clubs and organizations to have a well rounded resume of academics and leadership.”

Thank you, Sherman Riley, for representing SCSD so well and for inspiring the next generation of students.
