Due to the severe line of storms that came through the area this morning, and the resulting mass power outages that have occurred, the Suwannee County School District will be releasing school early today, Friday, May 10.
Bus routes will begin to run at 12:30. Student drivers will be dismissed as soon as school administration deems it safe to do so. Parents and guardians are welcome to return to schools to check-out students at any time. All students are excused. Please make arrangements to have a responsible adult home at the time buses arrive to drop students off at their home. For younger bus riding students that do not have someone at home, those students may be returned to one of two locations for pick-up by a parent/guardian. Buses will run their routes slower than usual and may be significantly delayed due to downed trees. Please be patient. The designated pick-up location for after hours reunification of younger elementary students are at two locations:
-Branford Elementary School for students in the south end of the District.
-Suwannee Pineview Elementary for all Live Oak elementary schools.

An eclipse of the sun will occur on April 8, 2024, and will be visible across our area with a 60% coverage. While no observers in Florida will be in the path of totality, we will see about 60% of the sun covered. During the eclipse, looking directly at the sun could cause permanent eye damage and blindness. The eclipse will start here at around 1:45 p.m. EST, with the peak at around 3:00 p.m.; it will end at about 4:20 p.m.
SCSD will not organize eclipse viewing for students present on April 8, 2024. Teachers are not permitted to take students outside during the eclipse. The only exception is that during dismissal, we will ask SCSD personnel to remind students to not look directly at the eclipse. We request that parents remind their children of the potential dangers of prolonged visual exposure to the eclipse.
To safely view the eclipse, use one of the following techniques:
Wear eclipse glasses or hand-held solar viewers that meet the ISO 12312-2 international safety standard. Ordinary sunglasses are NOT safe for viewing the eclipse.
Watch the eclipse on a live stream or television broadcast rather than in person.
For more information, consult NASA's solar eclipse safety guidelines at https://science.nasa.gov/eclipses/future-eclipses/eclipse-2024/

Just a reminder, Monday, March 25th, is a regular school day due to Hurricane Idalia.
